Hey guys! Looking to buy a used 2016 Toyota Hilux 4x4 to handle the rough roads out here in the Cayo District. The truck looks solid, but I am worried about the suspension wear from all the unpaved roads and potholes. Are ball joints and tie rods expensive to replace in Belize if they go bad?
Mawnin bro! The Hilux is an absolute beast for Belizean terrain, but our gravel roads and deep mud will wear down generic aftermarket ball joints in less than a year. OEM Toyota parts are expensive at the main dealers, but they last five times longer. Always check the front sway bar bushings and CV axle boots for tears—if mud gets inside the axle boots, the joint will grind and fail fast.
If you drive near Belize City or the coast, salt corrosion is another thing to watch out for. Make sure to check the frame underneath the truck bed for rust flaking. If the frame is clean, buy it, but give it a good underwash and application of anti-rust oil spray right away. It saves you major welding headaches later.
@Belmopan_Tech Thanks for pointing out the CV boots! I crawled under today and noticed the passenger side boot is actually brand new, but the driver side is cracking. The seller agrees to lower the price by $300 Belize Dollars so I can change it myself at a local garage. Appreciate the solid advice!
